February 3, 2010 -- A pedestrian is in critical condition after being struck by a hit-and-run driver at a crosswalk at the intersection of Main Street and Pacific Avenue Monday night.

Police said the driver -- a 40-year-old woman from Malibu -- was traveling northbound on Main Street when she struck the woman, who was walking westbound on Pacific Ave in a marked crosswalk.

"The driver attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle by using the bicycle/parking lane," said Jay Trisler, the Police Department spokesman.

"The pedestrian was about three feet into the crosswalk when she was struck by the vehicle," Trisler said.

The driver did not stop and continued northbound on Main Street, police said.

"A witness was able to obtain the license plate of the suspect's vehicle and notify the Santa Monica Police Department," Trisler said.

Officers saw the vehicle in the area of 2nd Street and Ocean Park Boulevard and arrested the driver for felony hit and run.

The victim -- a 28-year-old women from santa Monica -- was taken to a local hospital.

The Santa Monica Police Department is continuing to investigate the cause of the collision.
