The incident took place on May 11 when police reported an unconcious
man lying on the sidewalk. The victim was immediately transported
to an area hospital and succumbed to his injuries on May 16.
The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office declared the death
a homicide.
The incident took place on a block that is one of the most crime-prone
areas in the city, having been the site of several gang-related
shootings in the past five years.
Police responding to a call for service found the subject lying
unconscious on the sidewalk, said Sgt. Renaldi Thurston, the Police
Department spokesman.
“Paramedics from the Santa Monica Fire Department were
summoned and transported the subject to a local hospital,”
Thurston said.
Police determined that the man was the apparent victim of an
assault, he said.
