Memorial for Santa Monica Social Activist Set

By Lookout Staff

November 7 -- A memorial for Saul I. Zuckerman-Morrison, a Santa Monica resident and husband of former Santa Monica College trustee Dorothy Ehrhart-Morrison, will be held Sunday, November 18. He died peacefully on October 8 at Saint Johns Health Center with his family at his bedside.

A member of Santa Monicans for renters’ Rights, Morrison participated in many social, political, and community activities in Santa Monica. He also was a sworn member of the County of Los Angeles Juvenile Dependency Court, where he counseled minors on navigating the legal process.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on October 27, 1914, Morrison attended Thomas Jefferson High School and Brooklyn College in New York before leaving to serve his country in World War II.

Soon after the war and being discharged from the Army Morrison landed a job at UCLA. He met and married Esther Morrison, and the couple had two children.

After working as a marketing specialist and sales manager for a Los Angeles office furniture company, Morrison retired in 1984 and, three years later, married his second wife, Dorothy Ehrhart-Morrison.

Morrison was active with numerous organizations, including the Jewish Peace Fellowship, American Civil Liberties Union, Sierra Club, SMRR, the Democratic Party, NAACP, Doctors Without Borders and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition. He served on the MLK Coalition planning committee for more than 20 years.

Along with his wife Dorothy, he was also a member of the League of Women Voters of Santa Monica.

Morrison, who was a Buddhist at heart, subscribed to Carl Sandburg’s hope that "someday, there will be a war and nobody will come," according to family and friends.

“The interest closest to his heart was the welfare of children around the world,” his family wrote in a statement.

“He dedicated his life to nonviolence. He helped create a safe environment and a world where peace could thrive.”

Saul Morrison is survived by his wife Dorothy Ehrhart-Morrison; daughter Serena Thomas and son-in-law Miles Thomas; son David Morrison; Dorothy's daughter Donna Key; granddaughters Gabriella Leone, Alexandra Morrison, Lauren Key, and Allegra Smooth; great-grandson James Smooth the third; former wife Esther Morrison; and many relatives around the United States.

A celebration of Morrison’s life will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 18 at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church, 1620 18th Street and Arizona Avenue, Santa Monica. Parking is available at the Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center lot on 1311 16th Street, Santa Monica.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions be sent in Saul's name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 7560 SW Hunziker Street, Suite H, Portland, Oregon 97223.
