May 15 -- The body of a man believed to have been
homeless was found Saturday directly across the street from
the Loew's Santa Monica Beach Hotel.
Police were dispatched around 12:40 p.m. to the 1700 block
of Ocean Avenue, where they found the victim dead, according
to Lt. Alex Padilla, the Police Department spokesman.
"There didn't appear to be any signs of foul play,"
Padilla said.
While the man's identity is being withheld until relatives
in Los Angeles are notified, the Los Angeles County Coroners
office said he was a 52-years-old, Hispanic with his last
known address listed as the streets.
He was also known to have suffered from alcoholism and drug
addiction.
The cause of death remains unknown until further tests, according
to County officials, however police said the man showed signs
of "gastro-instestinal bleeding," possibly related
to damage consistent with alcohol, according to Padilla.
He is the second homeless person found dead in Santa Monica
in less than two months.
On the morning of March 29, the body of Elizabeth Bernice
Celaya was found outside the beach bathroom about a mile south
of the Santa Monica Pier, according to police.
She was 48 years old and believed to be homeless.
Celaya was unknown to either City officials or Santa Monica
Police officers who work with the estimated 2,800 homeless
who live on the city’s streets on any given day, according
to interviews.
