May 8 -- Police say a driver's obstructed view and
an elderly man stepping off a curb too early may have played
a part in a deadly pedestrian accident near Downtown Santa
Monica last week.
A 90-year-old man was killed at dusk Wednesday when a BMW
driven by a 37-year-old woman traveling southbound hit him
at the intersection of 4th Street and Idaho, police said.
According to authorities, no charges have been filed against
the driver, and an investigation is ongoing. But some details
of the accident are coming to light.
"There is some talk of a placard on the rearview and
its placement possibly could have contributed to the accident,"
said Lt. Alex Padilla, the police department spokesperson.
"The pedestrian may have stepped off the curb…but
we are still in the preliminary stages of the investigation,"
he said.
The victim was transported to UCLA in Westwood, where he
later died of his injuries, police said.
It is the fourth pedestrian fatality resulting from a car
accident in Santa Monica this year.
In the most recent accident, a woman in her forties was killed
on Second Street after she was struck by a County bus.
Another elderly man also died on Santa Monica Boulevard at
a crosswalk at Euclid Street, one of several lighted crosswalks
that were broken citywide.
The City has since moved to repair malfunctioning lights
and equipment.
