City TV Looking for Survival Stars

By Lookout Staff

March 9 -- If you’re prepared for disaster, you could be ready for your close up and 15 minutes of fame, at least locally.

As part of the City’s annual disaster preparedness campaign, City TV’s “I’ve Got 7” Contest is looking for two families or households and a business who are willing to share their preparations for disaster planning.

Those chosen will be showcased in an upcoming series of short pieces to air on City TV's news show "Santa Monica Update" carried locally on Time-Warner Cable, Channel 16.

"The three best preparedness stories will be chosen, and the participants will appear on City TV during the month of May where we'll show and tell what they've done," said Robin Gee, City TV's general manager.

“This a great chance for a family or business to show off the seven days worth of necessities that are needed to ensure survival after a major cataclysm and a good way to set an example for others to be prepared,” Gee said.

Winners will also be treated to free dinners at Santa Monica's Spitfire Grill, Gee said.

Those interested in presenting their "I'm ready for anything" preparedness story can send a letter or e-mail to describe what they and their family or business has done to be ready when a disaster, such as an earthquake, strikes.

Contest entrants should briefly describe what's in their preparedness kit, why items were selected and what motivated them to "Get 7" and be prepared. Entrants should include their name, address, phone number and e-mail address.

The American Red Cross urges households and businesses to stock up on seven-days- worth of emergency supplies, including food, water and medicine, as well as supplies for pets and personal needs.

Those supplies would last through a disaster when it might take five or six days or longer for aid to get there. Such a widespread disaster could include a major earthquake, terrorist attack or other event that would restrict access to the city or region for an extended period of time.

Applications are being accepted at I've Got 7 Contest, American Red Cross of Santa Monica, 1450 11th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401. Deadline for entries is March 16th, 2007. Segments will be videotaped at the winners' home or business in April for airing during May.

The contest and the "I've Got 7" disaster preparedness campaign is sponsored by the Santa Monica Fire Department and the American Red Cross of Santa Monica in partnership with City TV.
