February 6 -- An enterprising group of kiwis celebrated
New Zealand’s unofficial National Day (Waitangi Day) by
building a 100-yard-long sand sculpture Monday.

Acclaimed New Zealand installation artist Mike Mizrahi was commissioned
to build the sculpture, which is shaped in the form of a giant
silver fern, New Zealand’s National emblem.
Plenty of Santa Monicans and visitors, as well as several New
Zealand television crews were on hand to film the sculpture.
The event, which started at 8 a.m. and concluded at sunset was
broadcast live on television in New Zealand.
