Cool Jazz Sounds Sunday on the City Hall Lawn

By Lookout Staff

August 17 -- Nate Birkey -- Southern California’s “man with the horn” -- will bring his cool jazz sounds to the City Hall lawn during a free concert Sunday evening.

Drawing from a wealth of jazz and blues traditions and using familiar elements from contemporary rock, pop, and world music, Birkey’s sound has been praised by critics as “pure and true.”

A member of the jazz “cool school” Birkey uses his soft tenor voice and his longing trumpet tones to display a vast knowledge of the Great American Songbook and showcase his arresting original melodies, according to a statement issued by the City’s Cultural Affairs Division.

“’If you’re in the mood for music and love,” you’re sure to be found stretched out on the lush lawn in front of City Hall enjoying the dulcimer notes of Birkey’s band as they float across the refreshing breezes from the bay, City officials wrote.

“With his signature open white shirt and coat silhouetted against the western sky, Birkey will hypnotize the crowd which is building strongly every week as more and more locals discover this exciting new music series.”

The free concert will take place on the front lawn of Santa Monica City Hall from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Free parking is available after 4 p.m. at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium at 1855 Main Street and on the streets surrounding City Hall. And you can support the Virginia Avenue Park Teen Center by buying water, soft drinks and other treats from our local teens. Jazz on the Lawn is produced by the City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division.
