By Lookout Staff

November 16 -- A man was stabbed Monday night when a fight broke out inside a Santa Monica Airport hangar during a hip-hop awards ceremony, police said.

The victim, identified as a 26-year-old male black from Los Angeles, was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, police said.

The incident took place at 7:23 p.m. on the 3000 block of Airport Avenue during the Vibe Awards ceremony, which celebrates excellence in urban music, police said.

According to press reports, chaos erupted when Dr. Dre, who was about to receive a lifetime achievement award, was punched in the face.

His bodyguards then went after the attacker, and during the ensuing melee, the victim was stabbed, according to reports. It is unclear whether the victim was the man who went after the rap pioneer.

The suspect was described by police as a male black wearing a white shirt, police said.

Santa Monica police, who called on reinforcements from neighboring law enforcement agencies, located the victim, who was suffering from a stab wound, according to reports.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the stabbing occurred inside the hangar,” said Lt. Frank Fabrega, the police department spokesman.

Police were able to control the crowd of about 1,000 people, according to reports.

Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, was presented with his award when the ceremony resumed, according to reports.
