Man Assaulted by Transients By Lookout Staff May 11 -- A man was hospitalized after being assaulted Friday by two transients who made off with his cell phone and cash, police said. The victim told police, who responded Saturday morning to the 1500 block of the freeway embankment regarding an injured person, that he had been struck in the head with a bottle. Apparently, the victim knows one of the suspects who are local transients, said Lt. Frank Fabrega, the police department spokesman. The victim was transported to a local hospital and treated for a laceration to the head, Fabrega said. One suspect is described as a black in his fifties standing 5’4 and weighing 200 pounds. He was wearing a blue/black “T” shirt and dirty jeans. The suspect -- who may go by the name of “Smithy” -- may frequent the area of Cloverfield and Olympic boulevards. The second suspect is only described as a male. Anyone having additional information should call the Robbery-Homicide Unit of the Santa Monica Police Department at 458-8451.
