Oct. 27 -- A 19-year-old woman was shot to death on the beach in Ocean Park Saturday night, marking the seventh homicide in the city this year. Witnesses reported seeing two men wearing dark clothing running from the area, police said.

Police responding to reports of shots fired found the victim with several gunshot wounds to the upper body shortly after 10 p.m. at the 2000 block of the beach. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police did not release the identity of the victim pending notification of her next of kin.

A stretch of Ocean Avenue was closed Saturday night as police combed the area assisted by a helicopter circling overhead.

The killing brings the total number of homicides to seven this year, up from two in each of the last two years. Three of the homicides this year have been the result of domestic violence. A fourth occurred when a son killed his father.

The Robbery/Homicide Unit of the Santa Monica Police Department is handling the investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call 458-8451 or the Watch Commander's Office at 458-8426.
