Arts Commission Chair Resigns

By Lookout Staff

After seven years on the City's Art Commission, chair Jorge Pardo called it quits Monday night.

Pardo, who did not return a call for comment, wrote in his resignation letter that a new job opportunity starting in October will keep him from devoting the time needed to chair the 13-member commission.

"I am proud to have been one of many volunteers during this period dedicated to the success of our City through a focus on the creative capital and economic viability that arts and culture can provide," Pardo's letter states. "Indeed, can there be a great city without arts and culture?"

Pardo first joined the commission in 1994. His current term is set to expire in June of 2002.

During his time as chair, the Arts Commission tackled the controversial Solar Web project, which the City Council turned down, and is currently fighting to stem an exodus of artists unable to pay Santa Monica's skyrocketing rents.
