Outrageous for League of Women Voters President to Take a Political Position

August 7, 2020

Dear Editor,

I need to respond to the Opinion piece written by Natalya Zernitskaya, president of the League of Women Voters of Santa Monica ("State Legislature Must Act to Provide Common Sense Fixes for Our Housing Crisis," August 6, 2020).

For the president of the League to take and publish a political position is outrageous, biased, inappropriate, prejudiced and altogether wrong.

My mother was president of the Legal of Women Voters in Long Island. These were strong women who never took a political position. They were right down the middle with no bias, just facts, interviews and voter registration guidance.

How disrespectful of my mother's memory. These women of the past were brave and strong. They could clean a shot gun, fix a flat tire, make a house a home and love us with all their heart and loud voices.

Now we are dealing with weak and beholden Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights (SMRR) members who clearly comprise the League of Women Voters. They get their marching orders from the same smoky back room the seven SMRR Councilmembers do.

I'm disgusted that the League would allow their president to take a position on ballot measures.

I miss my brave strong mother and her friends, and we all hurt and are the worse off for it.

Santa Monica Rent Control Commissioner 2008-2012
