LETTERS -- No Need for Elected Officials

June 18, 2020

Dear Editor,

As your article points out, it seems like the death of Santa Monica Councilmembers in office has been all too common in recent years ("Council to Launch Process on Tuesday to Replace Morena," June 18, 2020).

Why have elected officials on the Council when they can just keep appointing fellow members of their choice?

Just think of the tens of thousands of dollars Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights (SMRR) could save every election.

And they wouldn’t need developers' contributions anymore to get reelected.

I guess that plan would fall by the wayside now that term limits and district elections are taking hold. Dying in office as a Santa Monica council member will be less likely in the future, and the election process will be alive and well in this city again.

Fortunately, Greg Morena did NOT die in office. He was smart enough to leave with good reason, but he will certainly be replaced (appointed) by a SMRR loyalist.
