School Facilities Bond Protects Our Children’s Future, Senator Says

October 25, 2018

Dear Editor:

As a former School Board member, a proud graduate of SMMUSD schools, and a current Santa Monica resident awaiting the birth of my first child, I know the importance of quality public schools.

Unfortunately, our aging schools no longer meet the safety and academic standards of our ever-changing world. It is up to us as a community to step up and protect our children’s future.

That is why Measure SMS is so important to our community. We need to pass SMS because it’s the only way we can make our 60 to 100-year old schools safer and upgrade them to offer learning and teaching that prepares students to succeed and contribute in the 21st century.

The bond will improve school campus security and emergency preparedness systems, it will repair deteriorating and outdated plumbing and electrical systems, and it will modernize classrooms and labs so that our schools can graduate students who will thrive in the college and career world they are entering.

I know firsthand how lucky we are to live in a district that is so well run that it has obtained a AAA bond rating. When we pass bond measures, we know the money is spent effectively and responsibly, as evidenced by the ratings of objective evaluators.

The District’s Financial Oversight Committee and the Bond Oversight Committee perform regular audits, which provides further assurance that monies from SMS will be spent on projects that ensure that our children will benefit.

Great schools make great communities and that’s why I’m so grateful to have grown up in Santa Monica.

No matter what our differences, we know how important it is to come together as a community to protect and support our schools. Protecting our children and their future is a basic democratic value.

I urge you to join me in voting YES ON SMS.

Ben Allen
Senator, 26th District
