Stretching
the Truth, Big Mistake and Thanks
October 12, 2004
Dear Editor,
SMRR (Santa Monicans for Renters' Rights) in their latest mailer,
have chosen to credit Councilman Ken Genser with the title "Architect."
This appellation is reserved by the State of California for those
who have earned it and are duly licensed to practice our profession.
I am sure that Mr. Genser will be upset by this slip of their
copy writers, but it does show that the SMRR leadership is willing
to stretch the truth on even a matter as insignificant as this.

Dear Editor:
I received a Measure S flier that had two candidates for the
college board as endorsees. This is very inappropriate. The college
bond should not promote anyone running for office.
Also, I've heard that SMRR leader Denny Zane received a hefty
sum to run the campaign. Big mistake.
I would have voted for Measure S, but now, forget it. I will
not support a bond that SMRR leaders gets money for.

Dear Editor,
As one of the authors of the ballot argument in favor of adjusting
our City's tax on tourism, I'm pleased to see Prop. N has now
been supported by the Chamber of Commerce, the League of Women
Voters, the Santa Monica Council of PTAs, and the Committee for
Excellent Public Schools.
A yes on N creates a locally-controlled revenue stream that the
state cannot take away. Our hotel bed tax hasn't been increased
in fifteen years, and supports City services we all enjoy -- such
as police, fire, paramedics, parks and recreation, environmental
protection and youth programs. It helps us fund our schools.
With Prop. N, Santa Monica residents have the opportunity to
sustain and improve City services without paying more themselves.
Thanks to the Chamber, the League, the PTAs and CEPS for supporting
a yes on Prop. N.
