Thanks for Keeping Solar Web Off The Beach

I would like to thank Mayor O'Connor and Council Members Holbrook, Feinstein and Bloom for keeping the Solar Web off the beach. Although I
agree that the proposed work was quite interesting, the presence of a 72 ft.
long, 16 ft. high structure mounted on a raised pedestal would have been an
inappropriate, precedent-setting intrusion into the last vestige of open space in our city.

I personally did not think we needed a massive monument on our beach to make us appreciate nature. The arguments to that effect reminded me of the old Viet Nam era argument that we had to destroy a village in order to save it. When I was a child, the operation of sundials and equinox demonstrations took little more than sticks and sheets of cardboard unobtrusively placed in schoolyards and backyards.

I can live with the underwhelming Wave, the Song-less Chairs and the Boats in Bondage under the pier. Solar Web, however, was the wrong piece at the wrong site. It was clear that all four council members agonized over their decision, but in the end they did the right thing.
