About Frank Gruber

Frank Gruber, who writes "What I Say," the new column for The Lookout, was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, home of Mike Piazza and Tommy Lasorda. Unlike Lasorda and Piazza, however, Gruber has never played or managed for the Dodgers although, as he points out, the Dodgers never asked him to play.

In 1978, after graduating from the University of Chicago and Harvard Law School, Gruber moved to southern California, settling first in Venice, and then moving to Santa Monica in 1983.

Professionally, his primary endeavor has been to practice entertainment law. He also calls himself a movie producer, although thus far despite strenuous efforts he has produced only one film.

Gruber involved himself in the early '90's in the Santa Monica political scene as a citizen participant in the development of the Civic Center Specific Plan. He was a member of the board of the Ocean Park Community Organization and treasurer of "Citizens for the New Civic Center," the citizens group that defended the Civic Center Specific Plan when it was the subject of an initiative election.

In 1994, City Council appointed Gruber to the Housing Commission and then, in 1995, to the Planning Commission.

Due to a complete misunderstanding, in 1999 the City Council chose not to appoint Gruber to a customary second four-year term on the Planning Commission, proof that in Santa Monica, an able and ambitious citizen, if he really plays his cards right, can go from unknown volunteer to political pariah in only six years.

According to sources who have found themselves seated next to Gruber at dinners and other events, Gruber is not bitter about having been dropped from the Planning Commission. His only regret about his Planning Commission years is that when he was a member, "Our Times" failed to include the commission, or any of its members, on its list of Santa Monica's most powerful people. Gruber often reminds people that "Our Times" is no longer being published.

In 1999 the School Board appointed Gruber to the Prop. X Oversight Committee and he was also a member of the Steering Committee of Community for Excellent Public Schools, a citizens group that formed during the 1999-2000 schools budget crisis. He resigned from both of these commitments to join The Lookout.

Gruber resides in the Ocean Park neighborhood of Santa Monica with his wife, a professor at USC, and their son.

Gruber has dedicated "What I Say" to Ray Charles.

Outrage of the Week

Clinton Mines Photo Op

Tuesday, June 29--The picture on the front page of every newspaper showed President Clinton hugging a 14 year old refugee to his chest in a refugee camp in Kosovo, conveying to the world what a genuinely caring, sensitive man our President is.

This picture shows Clinton to be even more shameless than when he and the White House staff set out to trash and destroy the reputations of every one who dared to suggest that he had had sex with Monica Lewinsky in the Oval Office. The incredible pain and suffering Gennifer Flowers, Kathleen Wiley et al went through as a result of the massive lies and defamations hurled at them by Clinton and the White House without any shame or conscience, hideous as they were, are nothing compared to this truly disgusting photo op by Clinton, following a speech in which he posed as the "great liberator" of these poor homeless people.

The truth is Clinton, along with Milosevic, was the principle reason these people's lives were destroyed and relatives massacred.

Playing the role of the benevolent world leader, he urged them to wait a few weeks before going home because he didn't want any more lives lost -- especially the lives of children -- by having returning refugees accidentally step on land mines. See what a caring, wonderful father figure our President is, worrying so much about these children and refugees. At the same time he is playing this role for the world to see, he forgets to tell these tragic people that it is he, President Clinton, who is responsible for those land mines.

It is he, President Clinton, who bombed these people's homes and cities into oblivion because he didn't have the testosterone to go after Milosevic and not kill and damage over a million innocent people. But instead night after night, week after week, bombs were dropped on homes and schools and hospitals and factories of innocent civilians - for absolutely no reason. Even a sophomore degree in psychology enables one to know that when you are dealing with a true psychopathic personality such as a Milosevic or a Saddam Hussein, they don't care how many hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians are killed, just so long as they and their money are safe. (Saddam has over $6 billion in foreign bank accounts.)

Clinton doesn't tell this 14 year old child, or the other refugees that it is he who is responsible for giving Milosevic a free hand to exterminate the Albanian people without any real fear of repercussion. Clinton doesn't tell them that, as I have written elsewhere, Milosevic being a coward in his unconscious psyche, as all bullies and especially psychopathic world bullies are, would never have sent his armies from Belgrade into Kosovo if he thought his life was in danger. If he thought NATO troops would be crossing the border coming after him, he would have stopped whatever ethnic cleansing he had undertaken, surrounded himself in Belgrade with every soldier at his command, and protected his life above all.

The moment Clinton made it clear the "we would not, under any circumstances, use ground troops in Kosovo," Milosevic was free to send his full military might into Kosovo to rape, murder, loot, destroy and drive out the innocent people there - the same innocent people before whom Clinton is now parading himself as a heroic liberator who "really cares."

The heinous ethnic cleansing by Milosevic had to be stopped. No question about that! And if Clinton had marshaled all of our armed might at the borders and made it clear to Milosevic, "We're coming after you with everything we've got …", the ethnic cleansing would have stopped immediately. And if the first air sortis demolished Milosevic's headquarters, personal residences, etc., and Milosevic was convinced the ground troops were right behind and coming after him, the war would have ended in less than a week, and there would be no refugee camps, no obliterated towns and villages, and none of the mass graves of gruesomely murdered innocent civilians.

But then, there would have been no refugee for Clinton to clasp to his bosom for that great photo op … and after all, as anyone who knows how Clinton, and all these politicians work, they know that one great photo op is everything, no matter what the price you pay for it.

Unfortunately, to those who have eyes to see, this photo op tells us everything we need to know about Clinton's psychopathic nature and lack of character and conscience, and everything we need to know about ourselves for continuing to stand by and let these people in Washington, on both sides of the aisle, continue to manipulate us and spin doctor us to death with photo ops like these.
