March 16, 2020 -- A 19-year-old Santa Monica man was arrested early Sunday morning for attempting to kill his father in an apartment building in the Wilmont neighborhood.

Jerry Lopez was arrested for attempted homicide and felony battery on a police officer on the 1100 block of 14th Street shortly after 1 a.m., according to police.

"The suspect struck the victim several times with a stick and fought with police," said Lt. Joseph Cortez, the Police Department spokesperson.

Lopez struck one of the officers as he arrived on the scene, Cortez said.

The officers responded to multiple 911 calls at around 1 a.m. regarding a possible fight, he said.

The charges will be presented to the District Attorneys office for filing, Cortez said.

Sunday's incident comes after a matricide and fratricide were among the three alleged murders committed in Santa Monica last year.

In February 2019, a 42-year-old man was charged with the fatal stabbing of his mother and the stabbing of his father in their Sunset Park home ("Man Pleads Not Guilty of Stabbing Mother to Death in Santa Monica Home," February 20, 2019).

Six months later, a man fatally shot his 19-year-old brother, marking the year's second homicide ("Santa Monica Man Charged in Brother's Murder," August 28, 2019).
