June 25, 2020 -- There may not be a fireworks display in Santa Monica this year, but that's no reason to celebrate Independence Day by setting off one your own, Fire Department officials warn.

The Fire Department this week issued a reminder that all types of fireworks are illegal in Santa Monica, which won't hold a fireworks display for the first time since 1991 due to the coronavirus emergency.

City Counciol Vacancy

"This includes so-called 'safe and sane' fireworks, which may not be used in Santa Monica EVEN IF they are legal in the city in which they are purchased," Fire Department officials said in a statement.

According to the City code, "No person shall possess, transport, sell or offer for sale" any fireworks.

Possession of fireworks is considered a misdemeanor punishable with up to a $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail, Fire officials said.

Earlier this month, Santa Monica College (SMC) officials announced they had canceled the school's 28th Annual “Celebrate America” event "due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions of large-scale, in-person events."

This month's event would have been the 28th fireworks display hosted by the college after the City scrapped its "Dawn's Early Light" celebration in 1992 ("Santa Monica College Cancels 28th Annual Fireworks Display," June 15, 2020).
