July 20, 2020 -- Four Santa Monica hotels are among the top 15 hotels in the Los Angeles area, with one of them topping the list, according to a readers poll by Travel + Leisure magazine.

The Santa Monica Proper -- which opened little more than a year ago -- was the top ranked hotel in the poll taken two weeks before the coronavirus pandemic crippled the travel industry.

The other hotels ranked in the magazine's poll are Casa del Mar (9th) and Shutters (10th), both owned by The Edward Thomas Collection, and the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows (12th).

"If you ask Travel + Leisure readers, the Westside is still the best side when it comes to deciding where they want to stay in the greater Los Angeles area," the magazine wrote.

Santa Monica had more hotels on the list than Downtown LA.

"While the thriving downtown district is well represented with three properties on this year’s 15-hotel list, most of the winners are in the neighborhoods and cities near the coast or major tourism hubs."

Hotels were rated on their facilities, location, service, food and overall value, according to the magazine's editors.

The 271-room Proper hotel opened in Santa Monica last June and "quickly became one of the most in-demand hotels in Los Angeles," according to the magazine.

The hotel in a renovated landmarked Downtown office building flanked by a sleek, curved addition is Santa Monica's first luxury hotel to open in more than a decade ("Santa Monica's First New Luxury Hotel in More than a Decade Opens Downtown," June 28, 2019).

Travel + Leisure also signaled out the Miramar, which "owes much of its success to its prime location."

“It’s the perfect walking distance for everything in Santa Monica,” one reader wrote.

Another noted the hotel, which has submitted plans for a major redevelopment, is “a couple steps to the beach and home to some of the most gorgeous sunsets in California.”

Nearly all of Santa Monica's 41 hotels are now open for business with heightened safety measures ("Santa Monica Hotels Poised for a Comeback," July 2, 2020).
