January 21, 2020 -- In what could be the year's first homicide, a suspect was arrested for murder in a residence near 14th Street and California Avenue Sunday night, according to Santa Monica police.

Jaime Bertrand, a 40-year-old male Hispanic, was arrested shortly after 12:30 a.m. by police responding to reports of a fight at a residence on the 1100 block of 14th Street, according to police incident reports.

When officers arrived at around 8 p.m., they found one of the people inside was unconscious, said Lt. Candice Cobarrubias, the Police Department spokesperson. He was declared dead at the scene.

"Officers and Fire began CPR on the unconscious individual (victim) however they were unable to revive him," Corbarrubias wrote in an email to the Lookout.

"As of now, what we know is that there was a physical altercation between two individuals inside the home and as a result, one of the individuals passed away," Cobarrubias said.

"We are still actively investigating and waiting on results from the autopsy."

A nearby resident said six detective cars and a forensic unit were outside an apartment building near the southeast corner of the street for some three hours.

There were three homicides in Santa Monica last year, down from seven in 2018.

In last year's homicides, the victims included a woman allegedly stabbed by her son and a teenager allegedly stabbed by his brother ("Man Pleads Not Guilty of Stabbing Mother to Death in Santa Monica Home," February 20, 2019 and "Santa Monica Man Charged in Brother's Murder," August 28, 2019).

In the third homicide, a homeless man was beaten with a shovel in a Downtown alley ("'Random' Homeless Killing Marks City's Third Homicide This Year," October 29, 2019).
