January 6, 2010 -- A decoy operation to catch outlets selling alcohol to minors turned up no violations, Santa Monica police announced Monday.

The operation -- conducted by the Vice Unit assisted by members of the State's Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control -- took place December 30 at five establishments on Wilshire Boulevard.

The minor decoy team used supervised individuals under the age of 20 who attempted to by alcohol at licensed premises, police said.

"All establishments did a commendable job and used proper protocol as the minor decoy was denied alcohol at each location," said Lt. Candice Cobarrubias, the Police Department spokesperson.

Any sale of alcohol to a minor decoy can result in criminal and administrative sanctions for the employee and the licensee, Cobarrubias said.

The team checked compliance at the following Santa Monica locations:

  • Vons market at 1311 Wilshire,
  • CVS at 1932 Wilshire,
  • Bristol Farms at 3105 Wilshire,
  • BevMo! at 3212 Wilshire, and
  • Rite Aid at 1331 Wilshire

"The Minor Decoy Program has proven to be an effective tool in promoting responsible practices in the sales of alcoholic beverages by licensees," program officials said.

The program has contributed to "reducing substance abuse and enhancing community welfare by limiting underage access to alcohol," officials said.

The project is part of the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control’s Alcohol Policing Partnership Program.
