September 14, 2019 -- The Santa Monica Review will host a launch party this month for what its editor describes as an "especially rich, powerful" issue that features "a surprising if welcome number of love stories."

The fall 2019 issue of the bi-annual literay magazine published by Santa Monica College (SMC) also features political irony and humor, as well as meditations on art and family, said the Review's editor Andrew Tonkovich.

Four recent contributors to the magazine will read from their work at the launch party Sunday, October 27, at 5 p.m. in The Edye at the SMC Performing Arts Center, event organizers said.

Short story writer Catherine Sustana "writes a dog story in Country-Western socio-political vernacular," while Abby Walthausen "does class privilege, childcare, and motherhood in LA," organizers said.

Recent JuxtaProse Fiction Prize award winner Jaime Campbell of Orange County "conflates natural and human crises in a story of perverse redemption."

While critic and novelist Yxta Maya Murray, the author of "Locas," "constructs an algorithm of action and responsibility to address the problem of art and the Self," organizers said.

Susan LaTempa, editor of the Paperback LA "casual anthology" series, will introduce the celebration.

Tonkovich -- who hosts the weekly show “Bibliocracy” on KPFK (90.7 FM) -- calls the writing in the fall issue, which features 14 original pieces, "solid and mature."

“It's genre-boundless, always smart, and gorgeous writing, whether in long, poetic lines or economical and vividly urgent plot-smart and purposefully contrived shorter stories.

"After two decades of considering manuscripts for publication," Tonkovich said, "I'm especially impressed with how easy it is to identify the obvious stand-outs, the must-read and must-publish work."

The new issue includes pieces by Denise Heyt McEvoy; UC Irvine MFA Ross Green; PhD candidate Daniel Uncapher; Michael Cadnum, author of "Earthquake Murder," and veteran TV writer and playwright Andrew Nicholls.

Other writers included in the issue are Gregory Spatz, author of "Half as Happy;" short story writer George McCormick, author of the acclaimed collection "Salton Sea;" Laura Glen Louis, author of "Talking in the Dark," and poet, naturalist and fiction innovator Charles Hood.

Cover art for the fall 2019 edition is by Puerto Rican graphic artist and filmmaker Poli Marichal.

Refreshments will be served, and books will be available for purchase and author signing. Abundant free parking available on premises at the college's Madison campus, 1310 11th Street.
