July 20, 2018 -- Santa Monica police will be on the lookout Friday and Monday for traffic violations that can lead to collisions involving motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.

The enforcement operations are scheduled for both days from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Police will be especially on the lookout for drivers who are speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals and failing to yield to pedestrians in cross walks.

They also will crack down on pedestrians crossing the street illegally or failing to yield to drivers who have the right of way.

Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked crosswalks or at corners, police said..

Bicyclists who fail to follow similar traffic laws that also apply to motorists also will be issued citations.

"The Police Department periodically identifies locations where bike and pedestrian collisions are prevalent, along with the violations that led to those collisions," Lt. Saul Rodriguez, the Police Department spokeman," said in a statement.

The enforcement will focus on those areas in "an effort to lower deaths and injuries," Rodriguez said.

Bicyclists -- who must follow similar traffic laws as motorists -- are encouraged to always wear a helmet. Those under 18 years of age must wear helmets by law.

Funding for the Bike and Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operations is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
