Santa Monica Pier Partners with Lyft to Offer Ride Services
By Lookout Staff
August 29, 2018 -- The national rideshare company Lyft has entered into an agreement with the Santa Monica Pier Corporation (SMPC) to provide transport service throughout the Downtown, pier officials announced this week.
Under the three-year agreement, Lyft will create pick-up and drop-off areas for those frequenting public programs on the pier, which attracts more than nine million visitors a year.
The service will be used during large events, such as the upcoming Twilight on the Pier concert series that kicks off next Thursday.
During the concerts, "Lyft will employ additional temporary staging areas for driver and passenger pick-up zones to alleviate traffic conditions," Pier officials said.
It also will offer free shuttles from the Pier to a dedicated pick-up zone at Main Street and Olympic Drive.
Additional zones will be announced for days when concerts are not scheduled, officials said.
Details will be available at the Pier Shop, and Lyft "brand ambassadors" will direct passengers to dedicated areas "for a swift and safe departure," officials said.
"Working with Lyft has provided us invaluable insight,” SMPC Executive Director Negin Singh said in a statement.
“Learning about the intricacies of ride share, and how we can best implement a system that encourages quicker service, safer drop offs and pickups, and better communication with drivers will improve not just the Twilight on the Pier experience, but all of our events.”
Lyft was the top choice recommended by a City committee to operate an electric scooter service in Santa Monica during a 16-month pilot program that kicks off September 17.
The second choice made by the panel composed of City officials is Jump, which is run by Lyft's rideshare rival Uber ("Two Major Scooter Companies Rally Supporters After Snub From Santa Monica City Officials," August 14, 2018).
The City is expected to announce the two winning bidders for the electric scooter contract, as well as the two choices to run electric bike services on Thursday.
