November 30, 2017 -- A Santa Monica family of four was displaced after fire consumed their Ocean Park apartment early Wednesday morning, Fire Department officials said. There were no injuries.

Fire Department units arrived 4 minutes 31 seconds after the initial 911 call came in at 2:05 a.m., officials said.

They found "heavy amounts of fire" coming from the second and third floors of the three-story, 12-unit apartment complex at 302 Ashland Avenue.

"Santa Monica Firefighters aggressively fought back the flames and performed a search of the apartment units," Fire Captain Patrick Nulty said in a statement.

A family of four occupied the unit where the fire started.

"Fortunately, the family awoke to the smell of smoke and the sounding of smoke detectors and quickly escaped without injury," Nulty said.

"Due to the amount of fire and the complexity of the apartment building, a “2nd Alarm” was requested for additional assistance from the Los Angeles Fire Department, Nulty said.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes and confined the flames to the apartment unit where it had started -- of a 2-story open floor plan occupying the 2nd and 3rd floor of the building, officials said.

Minor smoke and water damage effected one adjacent unit within the 12-unit building, officials said.

A total of 42 Firefighters, along with the Santa Monica Police Department and the American Red Cross, were on scene.
