November 3, 2017 -- Santa Monica College’s Emeritus Concert Band will rock out to the power-chord-driven tunes of Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and other classic rock acts at a free concert Sunday.

The tight, spry band, some of whose members are contemporaries of Robert Plant and Mick Jagger, with others a decode or two older, will perform at 3 p.m. in The Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center, 1310 11th Street.

Yosuke Miyoshi, who joined Emeritus as the band director in Fall 2015, will conduct. He received his teaching credential and Bachelor of Arts in Trombone Performance and Music Education from UCLA and his Master of Arts in Education from Point Loma Nazarene University.

The concert "will feature a mix of music that spans decades of Rock and Roll," organizers said. "Audience members are invited to hum along to their favorite rock songs with the Concert Band."

In addition to Led Zeppelin and the Stones, the band will play the music of Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond and Elton John, among others.

Composed of of “mostly retired” persons and made up of brass, woodwinds and percussion instruments, the 60-member band was founded in 1968 by Wallace Umber, who brought it to Emeritus College in 1979, and it has performed free concerts continuously ever since.

Some band members have been with the band for some 40 years and a number are in their eighties and nineties. The band has included a father and son duo, an aerospace engineer, an emergency room physician and retired teachers, well as former members of military bands and former leaders of school bands.

"The variety of musical and life experience that each band member brings to the group fuels an environment of ongoing inspiration," organizers said.

The concert band boasts a musical library of more than 800 arrangements, ranging from John Phillip Sousa marches and Broadway show tunes to rock and roll.

Seating for Sunday's concert is on a first-arrival basis. There is ample free parking on the premises.

The 60-member band is part of Santa Monica College’s Emeritus program, established in 1975 to offer free classes and special programs to older adults.
