February 17, 2017 -- The Santa Monica Big Blue Bus (BBB) will add service to six bus routes and improve schedules on seven others beginning Sunday, transit officials announced this week.

The changes -- which include enhancing service to Santa Monica College, UCLA and downtown Santa Monica -- will "better connect customers to the places they live, work and play," BBB officials said.

“The changes we are implementing will enhance reliability, efficiency, and ease with which customers move across the region on our bus system,” said Ed King, director of Transit Services at BBB.

“They also address feedback received from customers since our last service change," he said.

The feedback included "a desire for a one-seat ride from downtown to Century City and Palms," which led to the restoration of Route 5 service from the Bergamot Expo Line Station to downtown Santa Monica seven days a week, King said.

The route will serve Santa Monica via Colorado Boulevard, and Palms Expo Line Station all day on weekdays "creating more service connections to Century City," officials said. Weekend service also will improve to every 40 minutes.

Other changes include:

  • Increasing Route 7 weekday service to every 15 minutes all day to help meet customer demand for more local service on Pico Boulevard,

  • Connecting Route 43 to 17th Street/SMC Expo Line Station, Santa Monica College’s Main Campus, and both Route 7 and Rapid 7 service on Pico Boulevard, and

  • Discontinuing Rapid 10 service west of Broadway and 4th Street in downtown Santa Monica and offering 20-minute weekday service during peak hours.

Some major changes will enhance service for UCLA students, including adding service on Rapid 12 to better connect to Metro’s Expo Line and adjusting weekend schedules, BBB officials said.

Other changes include shifting Route 17 to serve UCLA’s Charles E. Young Terminal, instead of Hilgard Terminal, and increasing service to every 20 minutes. In addition, adjustments will be made to weekday morning schedules to UCLA and evening trips to Marina del Rey on Route 18.

Customers can also expect to see scheduling changes and improvements on Routes 9, 14, 15, 41 and 42.
