Soul Singer Bettye LaVette to Perform at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica
By Lookout Staff
August 28, 2016 -- Three-time Grammy nominated vocalist Bettye LaVette will bring her potent brand of soul to The Broad Stage in Santa Monica next month, venue officials announced last week.
LaVette, a whose career spans more than 50 years and is "an interpreter of the highest order," will take the stage Thursday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m., promoters said.
"LaVette gets inside a song and shapes and twists it to convey all of the emotion that can be wrought from the lyric," concert promoters said.
LaVette launched her career in 1962 at the age of 16 with her first single "My Man -- He’s a Loving Man" on Atlantic Records and recorded through the 1980s with numerous labels, including Atco, Epic and Motown.
She continued recording into the new century, winning the W.C. Handy Award for "Comeback Blues Album of the Year" with her 2004 CD "A Woman Like Me."
LaVette -- who has received the Blues Music Award for “Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer” -- also recorded four CDs for hipster indie label ANTI- Records with two of them receiving GRAMMY® nominations.
Her version of "Love Reign O'er Me" at the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors in a tribute to The Who won critical acclaim, promoters said.
Although LaVette is not a household name, the New York Times wrote that she "now rivals Aretha Franklin as this generation’s most vital soul singer."
Tickets, which start at $60, are now on sale. To commemorate The Broad Stage's 10th Season, the venue is presenting a series of one-of-a-kind fundraising events and ticket upgrade opportunities.
