School District Assures Public Use of Lincoln Middle School Field and Track in Santa Monica

August 10, 2017 -- School District officials issued a statement Wednesday assuring that the Lincoln Middle School Field and Track in Santa Monica will be open to the public when renovations are completed.
A longstanding agreement between City and the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) insures that the field and track, scheduled to reopen by January with new lights, will provide shared public use during non-school hours.
The project also includes reconstructing the track to a synthetic track and converting the existing grass field to synthetic turf with cork infill, officials said. The restroom facilities also are being upgraded.
“Our intent is to continue to provide time for use of the Lincoln field, track and basketball courts by the general public when it is not permitted for organized sports,” Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati said in a statement.
“Installation of field lighting will provide additional opportunities for permit groups and the general public to use this much needed open space during non-school hours.”
Since 2003, SMMUSD and the City of Santa Monica have maintained a Joint Use Agreement that enables the City to use District facilities for community programs during non-school hours, including permitting the fields for organized youth sports groups.
SMMUSD is managing the Lincoln field and track construction project, which was planned as part of Measure BB campus upgrades and is funded through Measure ES.
The measure, which was approved by District voters in 2012, authorized SMMUSD to issue $385 million in bonds to be used solely for school facilities building and infrastructure improvement.
Based on the assessed valuations when the bond statement was filed, the highest tax rate required to fund the bonds was $30 per $100,000 of the taxable property within the District.
