Santa Monica Playhouse Receives Two City Grants
By Lookout Staff
August 7, 2017 -- The City has awarded two grants to the Santa Monica Playhouse to support a free theater festival and free school theater field trips, Playhouse officials announced last week.
The grants from the Community Access and Participation (CAP) Grant Program and the Santa Monica Arts Commission "will make these theatre enrichment opportunities much more accessible to the community," officials said.
The City grants will fund the second annual free Fringe Festival of Theatre (aka Binge Festival or BFF), a two-week long celebration of theater arts that features Santa Monica and Los Angeles-based artists.
"The BFF aims to celebrate the range and depth of the human condition and the idea that theatre arts experiences are vital, transformative, and must be available for all," Playhouse officials wrote in a statement announcing the grants.
"All bets are off, limits on boundaries and form wide open, with shows to pique all interests and ages -- truly something for everyone."
The festival also includes theater arts workshops for youth and adults as part of "an overflowing toy-box of family-friendly events and productions, to bring all generations together on and off the stage," officials said.
The City grants also support ten free school theater field trips for Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) third-graders during the 2017-18 academic year.
The BFF will take place Monday, October 16 through Sunday, October 29, 2017.
