April 12, 2017 -- A seafood restaurant on the pier, a manufacturer of digital audio interfaces, a designer of pre-fab homes and a high-end shopping mall are the winners of Santa Monica's 2017 Sustainable Quality Award Grand Prizes, award officials announced Tuesday.

The 22nd annual awards -- which are sponsored by the City and Chamber of Commerce -- recognize local businesses that "demonstrate excellence in helping Santa Monica continue to move toward a more sustainable future," officials said.

"Since 1995, the SQA program has honored for their outstanding leadership in sustainability.

"Through this celebration, we hope to drive innovation and motivate others to also invest in sustainable practices, and ultimately the future of a sustainable Santa Monica," said Chamber President Laurel Rosen.

Launched in 1995, the awards have honored 150 Santa Monica businesses in a multitude of fields.

The diversity is represented by this year's winners, which included everything from a beach cafe and a beauty shop to a Class A office building among the SQA Excellence Awards winners.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony April 20 at Le Meridien Delfina Hotel that will feature green building pioneer John Picard as the keynote speaker.

A leading advocate of green architecture and construction, Picard "established the foundation of what would eventually become the US Green Building Council and a number of 'firsts' in the green building movement," event organizers said.

Picard has worked for firms that have included Microsoft, BP, Sony, The Gap, eBay and MGM.

Following are the winners of this year's Grand Prize Awards:

· The Albright, a family run and operated seafood restaurant "praised for being the first sustainable business on the Santa Monica Pier that continues to inspire a green movement" in other businesses on the century-old landmark,

· Apogee Electronics Corporation, a manufacturer of digital audio interfaces and audio converters that "strives to achieve the most ecofriendly and balanced business possible by minimizing plastic and environmentally harmful components in its products,"

· LivingHomes, a designer and developer of modern prefabricated homes that "combine world-class architecture with an unparalleled commitment to healthy and sustainable construction," and

· Santa Monica Place and its owner, Macerich, which have created "an award- winning, LEED® Gold-certified shopping experience offering a collection of luxury brands, open air dining and entertainment."

This years SQA Excellence Awards go to American Cancer Society Discovery Shop for Excellence in Economic Development and Le Meridien Delfina Hotel for Excellence in Social Responsibility.

The winner of awards for Excellence in Stewardship of the Environment are Back on the Beach Café, Beautycounter, Red Bull North America, Uplifters Kitchen and Water Garden.

Tickets for the awards ceremony can be purchased online at www.smsqa.com or reserved in advance by calling 310.393.9825. Pre-paid tickets are $50 for Chamber members and $60 for non-members.
