June 27, 2016 -- It has been
an eventful past several days in Santa Monica’s public schools with
changes at the top levels.
Santa Monica High School principal Eva Mayoral announced her resignation,
effective June 30, after three years on the job.
Also, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD) appointed
Lynda Holeva as principal at Roosevelt Elementary. She has been a vice
principal at Will Rogers the past two years.
A statement from the SMMUSD says Mayoral is moving out of California
to spend more time with family, including “a cherished granddaughter.”
Mayoral had been with the district for two decades, including a stint
as principal at John Adams Middle before coming to Samohi.
“Her instructional leadership and commitment to each and every student
was unwavering and with a tremendous heart,” Assistant Superintendent
Mark Kelly said. “She will be missed by all, and we wish her all
the best in her cross-country move.”
Mayoral’s tenure is near the average length for principals at the
district's largest campus in recent years. Her predecessor Laura Fretz
was on the job for two years.
Other recent Samohi principals include Hugo Pedroza serving for five years
and Ilene Strauss on the job for four years.
The district says it will “move forward immediately” to find
Mayoral’s replacement and release information about that “in
the coming weeks.”
Holeva comes to her new position after working as vice president and
in another administrative role at Will Rogers the past two years.
She previously worked for many years in the Encinitas Union School District.
