March 9 -- A Santa Monica air conditioner repairman may be a serial killer responsible for murdering nearly a dozen women, Los Angeles County homicide detectives said last week.
Michael T. Gargiulo, 32, who faces an attempted murder charge and two murder charges, including the 2001 slaying of Ashley Ellerin, a fashion student who was the girlfriend of actor Ashton Kutcher, could be a suspect in the murder of nine other women, according to press reports.
Homicide detective Mark Lillienfeld told The Channel 4 News Thursday that Gargiulo is the prime suspect in the murder of ten women whose images were pulled off Gargiulo's home computer.
The victims resembled each other, and in every case the murderer used a knife in the attacks, Lillienfeld said.
Gargiulo used a knife in the attempted murder of a Santa Monica woman who fought off the intruder.
Gargiulo, who was arrested for the incident last June, repeatedly stabbed the victim after breaking into her home late at night.
Gargiulo, who moved to California from Chicago, Illinois, was living in Santa Monica when he was arrested, Lillienfield said
DNA collected at the scene of the attack in Santa Monica linked Gargiulo to a case in Illinois.
Homicide detectives, who released images of the victims, are trying to piece together a case that links Gargiulo to ten murders, Lillienfeld told Channel 4 news.
