Crane Topples At Santa Monica Pier

By Lookout Staff

February 2 -- The Santa Monica Pier was closed to vehicular traffic Wednesday after a 28,000-pound crane toppled over, but no one was hurt, authorities said.

The crane was being used to lift construction materials when it "slowly rolled over" on its side shortly before 9 a.m., according to a witness.

The pier sustained minimal damage and remained open to foot traffic, said Santa Monica fire Capt. Scott Ziegert.

The crane was being used as part of an ongoing project to strengthen the pier, Ziegert said.

The crane was set upright by a larger crane that was brought in, authorities said.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.
